Electronic reading provides your parent the ability to stay engaged. Our home care team suggests that today’s technology is allowing your mother and father the capacity to remain independent, developing new skills if they want to expand their horizons. Although electronic reading is not new, nowadays it is much more sophisticated. Previously someone with poor eyesight couldn’t go any further than an audiobook, and although that still exists (and is more popular than it was 10 years ago), there has been a surge in the development of reading platforms for older adults. Most computers, cell phones, tablets, and e-readers include large-print screen reading available. Giving your loved one a convenient way to read may be a good choice among elder care options.
Your parent should continue to participate in the activities they enjoy. If they begin to have diminishing eyesight, a medical team may be more appropriate than elder care options. But once that is resolved, look for ways to improve your parent’s quality of life. For the active senior citizen who may be wearing hearing aids, using earphones to listen to an electronic book may not work well for them. However, many hearing aids now work with an adaptor which can plug in to your loved one’s device and transmit directly to the hearing aids.
Your mother or father may prefer reading a book rather than listening to it. Many e-readers come with settings that allow your loved one to change font sizes, so they can adjust the pages of their books. Choices are important for your parent. At this stage of life, too often they may believe that certain activities are just off-limits, when instead a little help will allow them to enjoy their hobbies just like before. You should consider devices to assist your loved one with electronic reading so that they can enjoy living independently regardless of their elder care options.
