Home Care for the Elderly Can Help Adults with Dementia

When it can be difficult to express emotions through words, a picture can be a wonderful thing. In home care for the elderly may bring art into your home when caring for your mom or dad. Art therapy has been identified as a useful activity to support the communication of dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. We have all doodled little pictures in notebook margins or agendas, and even simple exercises like these can help your loved one exercise their mind and communicate their needs.

Art therapy may be taken to a higher level of in home care for the elderly, asking your mother or father to draw or paint a picture such as a tree, a flower, or something that they like. While your parent is drawing, the provider may ask about the picture to encourage conversation. Whether mom or dad chooses to discuss their work or to remain involved in their task, moments like these are an opportunity for caregivers to connect with your loved one. This kind of mental engagement isn’t a guaranteed way to prevent or slow dementia, but it can improve your loved one’s quality of life.

Your mother or father may like using their hands, so molding or other crafts may be a better form of art therapy. When selecting an art project, in home care for the elderly recommends being aware of what materials your loved one will be working with. As we age, we all can lose some of our finer motor control and our ability to distinguish between dull colors. We recommend bright, saturated colors and large materials in containers that can be distinguished from each other can help your loved one get into art activities.

Remember that art therapy isn’t a foolproof way to engage your loved one – everyone is different. If your parent hates painting, don’t be surprised if they aren’t happy to pick up a brush again. However, art therapy can be useful for older adults from every walk of life, and we recommend looking into it!
