It’s Flu season, and your parent is sniffling and coughing. Initially, you may assume it’s just the cold. Your mother or father might have a great bill of health usually, and they might have all their vaccines in order. As symptoms persist and worsen, you may discount it as a fluke, but our elder home care team recommends paying close attention when a loved one is ill. Dangerous diseases like bronchitis may be to blame for your parent’s worse symptoms. Today we are going to talk about bronchitis – its symptoms as well as what you should do.
You or your loved one’s caregiver may noticed that, that even with what is supposed to be the proper cold regimen, your parent is not recovering. Instead if feeling better, the cold is lasting and they seem to cough more and more. Symptoms of bronchitis include a “dry cough” (coughing without phlegm), a tight feeling in the chest (not the same as a heart attack!), wheezing, shortness of breath, congestion, fever, and tiredness. If these symptoms begin to pile up, start investigating if your parent is suffering from bronchitis.
Your parent may not want to accept the diagnosis, but bronchitis is a dangerous illness that needs treatment immediately if confirmed. Your loved one needs to go to the doctor, where they will run a few tests such as X-ray scans and blood tests. If your loved one has any other underlying medical issues, bronchitis may weaken them further and direct assistance such as elder home care or private duty nursing may be necessary for recovery.
Treatment for bronchitis is a different world from day-to-day life, and your loved one may want assistance transitioning home. An elder home care aid can help with this by helping them around the house, assisting with transportation, keeping up with medications, and preparing meals.
