Adult Home Care Believes in the Power of Conversation for Loved Ones with Dementia

Sep 7, 2017 by Alan White

Dementia is not only difficult for you; it is also frustrating beyond words for your loved one. It is of vital importance for your loved one with dementia to have human contact and communication even in their most difficult days. The changes your loved one may undergo can make communication difficult for them. They will need a guide to help them through this journey, and adult home care is an excellent source. Adult home care may include outside personnel as well as friends, family, and community volunteers. Since many aging adults will experience some form of dementia in their lifetime learning the values of respect, and supporting the needs of the senior population is muchly needed.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when talking with your parent (or spouse) with dementia.

  • It’s hard to communicate with more than one person at a time. If you are familiar with individuals on the autism spectrum, or people that have ADD, or ADHD that get distracted easily, the same skills apply here. It may be necessary to keep conversations in a quiet setting to avoid overstimulation & confusion.
  • Little things may agitate your loved one with dementia. We recommend allowing them the opportunity to lead the conversation and you follow their path. Don’t argue their points, even if they are wrong. Remember the reason for these conversations – helping your loved one engage with the world around. It shouldn’t be an argument.
  • According to adult home care experts, you and others must remain focused and calm. Try not to take offense at the words or actions your loved one uses.
  • Continue to love them, even though it can feel like you’re talking to a different person; they are still your loved one, and they can hear and see you.
